Start-Off Question

SOUTH PACIFIC was written in 1949. What about the show resonates most with you today?

  • While the story may not take place now, the emotions that the characters feel, and the problems they face are timeless. There are, unfortunately, issues today caused by misinformation and prejudice, much like those Nellie and Cable experienced on the island. Perhaps this show can be used as a way to move forward. As Nellie eventually overcame her prejudice, so can many of us accept our differences. whether or not this goes to show that love conquers all is another question, but I think that the play does show us that putting aside our differences can be what makes all the difference in the end.
